Cave of the Chimes

Own a Piece of Colorado History with Integrated Mountain Properties’ Cave of the Chimes Listing

A property unlike any you’ve ever seen, Integrated Mountain Group and its proud subsidiary Integrate Mountain Properties invites you to marvel at over 4 decades of building perseverance. The Cave of the Chimes property began construction in 1978 in Glenwood Springs Canyon, after the current owners discovered it while visiting other caves and camping in the area above Glenwood Springs Colorado.

When Joseph Claudon and his wife Celina met the original real estate agent (other than the current listing real estate agent) who told them about and showed them a property close to town which Joseph later discovered and confirmed had a cave located within its boundaries. Soon after they sold their Maryland home and moved to Colorado to learn about blasting rock and other mining activities. The Cave of the Chimes is a symbol of Colorado resilience and the unbound limits of human ingenuity. The owners lugged tools up the face of the mountain in waist-deep snow. They lived there full time before it was furnished and visited the local Hot Springs pool to rejuvenate and clean up in the bath house. Perhaps most importantly, they spent forty years of their lives transforming the cave into an architectural wonder.

Integrated Mountain Group invites you to continue that history. We’re warning you, this property isn’t for those who want something traditional. It’s not for those looking for the cookie-cutter Colorado experience. It’s for the trail-blazers, ruffed individualists out there, those who still believe that nothing worthwhile comes easy.

Chiseled Into Glenwood Springs Canyon

The Cave of the Chimes Property is tucked deep within the Glenwood Springs Canyon walls. The property gets its name from the cavern system that houses it. Featured in the “Caves of Colorado” and spanning thousands of square feet, this cave contains numerous stalagmite and stalactite formations.

Despite its rugged seclusion in the privacy of the cave, the Cave of the Chimes property combines breathtaking views of Glenwood Canyon with the convenience of being located just minutes away from Glenwood Springs. Few other properties can boast these types of amazing views while retaining their accessibility. The Cave of the Chimes property is the exception.

The Cave’s Features

The Colorado listing has over 3000 square feet and includes 25.13 acres of land. The walls of its custom two-bedrooms and two bathrooms were hand carved into Iron Mountain. It comes furnished and has an elevator shaft along with stairs that lead into the dwelling. A tunnel which originates in the master closet and adjoins the billiard/ game room provides a look at numerous formations including the chimes, a unique stalactite and stalagmite formation. In addition, instead of a ceiling, the cave’s walls hover over top of most of the dwelling and add to the property’s rugged authenticity.

The Cave’s History

Joseph and Celina got their inspiration from their love of caves. Avid spelunkers, they fell in love with Colorado and moved from the East, trading the settled lifestyle for a courageous cliffside purchase. For nearly five decades, they relentlessly refined the cave. Where most people saw rocks and unforgiving caverns, they saw the possibility for a home.

The Cave of the Chimes’ history is one of the most alluring aspects of the property. Yes, the property has breathtaking views, features fit for a superhero’s lair, and the most unique entryway you can imagine. But there’s something more distinctive about this property that shouldn’t be overlooked.

One should understand the toil and time it took the previous owners to craft this marvel. First, much of the cave home was created by the owner, who was originally an accounting professional. The owner shipped the elevator from afar and hand-drilled and blasted the shaft himself. The retrofitted elevator was put in place with the use of a rented crane. The cave is also accessible by stairs that wind down the cliff side The owners spent hundreds, if not thousands, of man hours pouring concrete by hand on the side of a cliff to facilitate the entrance access. Without a doubt, this property isn’t, nor was ever, your average construction site.

Your Chance to Continue

Colorado Tradition

Colorado is known for its rugged pioneers and the Cave of the Chimes is part of that tradition. Joseph and Celina Claudon painstakingly devoted their lives to their cave dwelling. The new owner will no doubt need to possess the same traits of individualism, perseverance, and commitment to their vision.

This property isn’t for the faint of the heart. It’s for those who want to build on something that once seemed impossible over 40 years and 30,000+ man hours ago. A surface building site with an underground bunker Man cave? A subterranean playground? a starting point/ spring board for a world class destination to be? Or maybe just a very unique private secluded spot? Only the daring will be able to build on what this Colorado property has become.
